Katherine Griggers Coweta's spelling bee winner



Jefferson Parkway Elementary School fifth grade student Katherine Griggers is officially Coweta County’s best speller, after winning first place in this year’s county Spelling Bee, held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts.

Griggers and Atkinson Elementary student Emily Finger competed as finalists after 15 rounds of competition in this year’s bee, which began with 25 spellers in all. Griggers won the bee after spelling the word “collation" and then "Philadelphia.” Kayla Falvo from Evans Middle School was this year’s third place speller, and each of the three students were awarded ribbons and gift certificates from Scott's Bookstore.

The annual spelling bee is open to students in graders 4 through 8. Falvo, Finger and Griggers are eligible to attend the District 5 Georgia Association of Educators Spelling Bee on February 24.

Winners and alternates from each Coweta County elementary and middle school attended Monday’s bee, with 1st place winners from each school competing in the bee. The annual Coweta County spelling bee is sponsored by the Coweta Association of Educators-Certified. Newnan High School art teacher Jodie Hobbs coordinated the event, which was hosted by school system elementary curriculum director Nancy Royal and CAE-C president Nancy Sizemore.

Dr. David Gregory, director of preschool and federal programs for the school system; Rosemary McCoy, media specialist at Arnco-Sargent Elementary; and Leigh Munson, assistant principal at Moreland Elementary, served as judges. Dean Jackson served as this year’s caller.
