East Coweta High AP teachers recognized for program success

The Coweta County Board of Education recognized East Coweta High School’s Advanced Placement (AP) Teachers at their most recent board meeting.

The high school’s thriving AP program enrolls over 600 students in 13 classes ranging from AP Calculus to European History to Art History. Advanced Placement classes offer students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school. They also prepare students for AP exams, successful passage of which allows students to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both. About 17 percent of the more than one million high school students in almost 15,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar. Principal Derek Pitts said that 332 East Coweta High School students were expected to take 552 AP exams this year alone.

Superintendent Blake Bass praised the success of the East Coweta program, noting that the scholarship of the classes prepares students very well for college, and successful student completion of AP courses saves families money when students begin college.

Last year, thirty-seven students at East Coweta High School earned the designation of AP Scholar at the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams, administered in May of 2006.

One student - Tarun Patel – qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of the exams.

Eight students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of the exams, including students Brent Bermingham, Andreas Bluehs, Carolyn Crist, Harper Harris, Tarun Patel, Megan Upchurch, William Paul Warren and Wesley Woodall. Eleven students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of the exams, including students Courtney Bailey, Adam Franklin, Walter Harden, Krystal Hynson, Martin Johnson, Daniel Rahim, Caylin Riey, Emilio Rodriguez, Carly Schmitt, Brittany Taylor, and Shaun Terry.
