The Governor’s Honors Program – held June 8 through July 19 at
Valdosta state University – is a six-week summer instructional
program designed to provide intellectually gifted and
artistically talented high school students challenging and
enriching educational opportunities not usually available during
the regular school year.
The 10 finalists were among 40 Coweta County students nominated
to the highly-competitive program this year. They were chosen
from among all nominees statewide, following a rigorous and
highly selective application and interview or audition process
held throughout the winter.
All 40 nominees were honored on January 18 at a Governor's
Honors Recognition Breakfast held at the Central Educational
Center (CEC). The breakfast was sponsored by Newnan Utilities

The Georgia Governor's Honors Program is fully-funded by the
Georgia General Assembly, and operates at no cost to
participants. The purpose of the program is not just to provide
selected high school students with unique academic activities,
but also to instill in participants the skills, knowledge and
attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.
Rising juniors and seniors in Georgia's public and private high
schools may be nominated by their teachers, in a specific
instructional area in which their abilities, aptitudes and
interest lie. Transcripts of grades and records, nomination
forms, endorsements and other information is submitted as a part
of the nomination, and local nominees then attend statewide
screening interviews or auditions.
Major instructional areas offered to students include
agriscience/biotechnology, agriscience/environmental science,
English (communications arts), foreign languages (French,
German, Latin, and Spanish), mathematics, science (Biology,
Chemistry, and Physics), social studies, visual art, theatre,
music, dance, design, technology and executive management.
Students also select a minor area outside their major area of
study. All performing groups are also open to the entire student
body, including orchestra, band, chorus and theatre productions. |
