Dear Parents of 3^rd, 4^th, & 5^th grade students:

The music curriculum at Atkinson includes playing the recorder for the 3^rd, 4^th, and 5th grades.  This is a small flute-like instrument of high quality, durable plastic.  The recorder provides an excellent, easy way for the children to learn to read music and also have the experience of playing in a group.  If you attended our Christmas program last year, you heard the 4^th & 5^th graders perform with their recorders.  I was very proud of their performance, and I hope that your child will be able to share that experience this year.

(3^rd graders will learn to play the recorders in January, and will perform in our Fine Arts Night on April 29^th.  Orders for 3^rd graders should be sent in January.)

I believe that ownership creates a special feeling of pride for the child and is an important sanitary consideration.  If you would like for your child to have their own recorder, please send $5.00 as soon as possible.   Otherwise, your child will have to play one of the old recorders that I have in the classroom. The only problem with using a school recorder is the fact that the students will not be able to take the recorder home to practice.  These recorders are used mainly when a child accidentally forgets to bring his recorder to music class.

I use the Peripole Angel Soprano Halo recorders. It is very important that the students have the instrument from the same company.  The sound of the recorder from one company to another can be very drastic. This can sound horrible when different recorders are mixed!  I am able to order recorders directly from the company for much less that you would pay in a music store. Please to not purchase a recorder elsewhere.  You may purchase a second recorder if desired; one for home practice and one for school.

**Your child can use this same recorder for three years. Recorders come in a blue zipper case and include a neck strap, joint lubricant, and cleaning rod.  I will provide a music practice booklet for your child.
