REACH Program

What is the REACH program?

REACH provides differentiated instructional services in core academic content areas to eligible Coweta County School System students in grades K-12.

How does my child qualify?

According to Georgia Law, students can be qualified through multiple criteria. This means that they have scored in 3 or 4 areas below:

• Mental Ability at 96%ile or above
• Achievement at 90%ile or above
• Creativity at 90%ile or above
• Motivation at 90%ile or above

Or have

• Mental Ability at 99%ile K-2

and 96%ile or above for Grades 3-5

AND

• Achievement at 90%ile or above for Total Reading or Total Math or Composite

What is Giftedness?

"A gifted student is one who demonstrates a high degree of intellectual and/or creative ability(ies), exhibits an exceptionally high degree of motivation and/or excels in specific academic field(s) and needs special instruction and/or ancillary services to achieve at levels commensurate with his or her abilities."

When is the referral period?

If you have a student who qualified for a gifted program in another county in Georgia, then the student will receive services without additional testing. If you have a student in a gifted program in another state, then the student will be evaluated to see if he or she qualifies for gifted services under Georgia law.

The Six Great Gripes of Gifted Kids

1. No one explains what being gifted is all about- it’s kept a big secret.

2. The stuff we do in school is too easy and it’s boring.

3. Kids often tease us about being smart.

4. Friends, who really understand us are few and far between.

5. Parents, teachers (and even friends) expect us to be perfect, to “do our best” all the time.

6. We feel too different and wish people would accept us for what we are.

Eligibility Criteria

Coweta County School System administrative procedures are designed to ensure a fair and valid evaluation process.  All procedures are full compliance with the state's eligibility criteria.

Evaluation results are reviewed by the School Eligibility Team, System staff and, if warranted, by a System Eligibility Team.

Scores are considered current for two (2) calendar years.  All scores are derived to yield percentile by age.

**In special cases, the submission of a product or performance may be substituted in the areas of creativity and motivation upon approval of the System Eligibility Team. Students may not be placed using 2 Renzulli Scales.
