GERMAN II  (614120010)

 

TEACHER:  HERR SEALS

 

 

Description:  Builds on skills acquired in German I by further enhancing reading, composition and conversational skills.  There is more in-depth emphasis of German structure.  Culture, history and current events in the German-speaking areas of the world are integrated into the overall course content.

 

Goals and Objectives:  By the end of the term, the students will need to demonstrate the following skills:

 

-          Socializing in a variety of spontaneous situations (greetings, leave-taking, inquiry as to another’s well-being, saying how he/she feels)          

-          Expressing emotion, stating opinions, making assumptions

-          Reporting of events in the recent past and distant past

-          Expressing conjecture as to future events, plans, wishes

-          Communicating information in various social settings

-          Reading varied material for content and being able to translate from German to English verbally and in writing

-          Reading a menu, ordering food in a restaurant

-          Travel directions, map reading skills, following oral and written directions

 

 

Methods of Instruction:

 

-          Student oral and written responses to questions

-          Review of and progression in German structure, with more in-depth use of skills

-          Listening comprehension exercises

-          Progression toward a more informed, mid-level fluency in class discussions

-          Guided conversations in pairs or groups

-          Music,  video and other items relating to culture, current events and history

-          Komm mit! (Level 2), Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 2003

-          Communicative CDs

-          Visual materials about culture and history

-          Other themed information as appropriate

 

 

Evaluation:

 

-          Teacher observation

-          Class participation/speaking German

-          Written and oral quizzes

-          Chapter tests

-          Special reports/projects

-          Term exams
