Host Team
- The
host team will provide a large meeting room, rooms which are set up for
competition, refreshments and team name cards. It is suggested that refreshments be divided and placed on
tables that are labeled with team names.
The signal that will be used to end each round will be explained
during the welcome/refreshment period.
The host team will send a map to the school to all teams.
- West
Georgia RESA will arrange for the purchase of questions from a commercial
company. West Georgia RESA will
provide three rounds of questions in folders or envelopes labeled Round 1,
Round 2, and Round 3. The
questions will be distributed at the beginning of each round. A round consists of twenty toss-up
questions, twenty bonus questions, and five tiebreaker questions. Three to five questions from each of
the following areas should be included in each round: Language Arts,
Science, Social Studies, and Math.
Fine Arts, Health, Physical Education and Current Events may also
be included. The host team will
review the questions for possible errors and alternate answers prior to
the meet.
- A
Timekeeper, Spotter, Scorekeeper, and Reader must be provided for each
room. Students may serve in all
positions except Reader. A
training meeting should be held prior to the day of the meet for all of
those workers.
- The
host team should provide three score sheets for each round in the team
packets.
- The
host team coach serves as final authority should a dispute arise.
- The
host team will arrange for careful receipt and distribution of all
equipment.
Visiting Teams
- Each
school may have only two teams, varsity and/or junior varsity. A team may consist of up to eight
members. JV teams must be from
grades 8-10 and varsity can be grades 9-12. A total of sixteen team members may attend each match.
- If
unable to attend, notify the host team as soon as possible. This is extremely important! Please
make every effort to be on time so that matches may begin promptly. Notify
the host team of your attendance by noon on the Friday before a meet or
forfeit participation in that meet.
Please call the day of the meet in the event of an emergency
cancellation.
- If an
odd number of teams will compete at a meet, an alternate team will
participate. The alternate team’s
score will not count toward match results. The alternate team may be substituted between rounds. Only one alternate team may compete
in a round.
- Each visiting team will bring a
Quiz-A-Matic, an extension cord, and a stopwatch. These should be clearly labeled
with the school’s name. Each
visiting team will provide a scorekeeper (may be a coach or student)
- Spectators
should address any questions to the team coach during the breaks. Under no circumstances will spectators
interrupt or cause a disturbance during the match.
Timer
- After
a toss-up question is read completely, the team members have five seconds
to respond by buzzing in. An
exception is made for questions requiring computation. These questions will have a
fifteen-second response time.
These questions will be identified in advance by the Reader.
- The
person buzzing in must begin the answer within three seconds of being
recognized by the Spotter.
- If the
first team’s answer is incorrect, the other team has 3 seconds to buzz in and
must begin their response immediately upon recognition.
- Each
bonus will be read only once. The
captain or designee must begin the team’s answer immediately after the
Timer calls for the answer.
Answers must proceed without interruption once time is called. Bonuses may be reread only if the
Reader determines he has made an error or confused the wording. Bonuses will be read part by part and
will be allotted five seconds consultation time per part for a four-part question
or ten seconds per part for a two-part question. If the bonus asks for all four answers at once, twenty
seconds is allowed. The other team
will have a chance to give the correct answers missed by the first
team. Computation bonuses read in
this manner will be allotted fifteen seconds per part. The Timer will call for the answer
which must be given immediately. If the team that answered the
bonus question does not answer correctly, the question will bounce back
immediately after each part with no extra time, to the other team. Only the captain may answer a
bounce-back question.
Spotter
- The
Spotter operates the Quiz-A-Matic System and acknowledges the person who
is to answer by school name and number.
If there is no Quiz-A-Matic System, the Spotter stops the Reader
when a hand is raised.
- If any
team confers in any manner during the toss-up the Spotter will notify the
Reader for a decision on disqualification for that particular question.
Reader
- The
Reader will read the rules prior to the beginning of Round One and
identify the team captains.
- The
Reader is the final judge. Only
the team captain may contest an answer.
Once this has been done, play will resume. After the round is completed the
coaches will decide how to handle any possible changes and/or
solutions. If a procedural
question arises, the Reader may confer with the coaches. Participants, spectators, and coaches
cannot argue about questions or answers.
The answer on the Reader’s sheet is the only acceptable
answer. Unless otherwise requested
in the question, last names will be acceptable. The Reader will accept only the first answer given by a
team. If the answer given is part
of the correct answer, the Reader may ask for a more specific answer if no
part of the answer given is incorrect.
For example, if the answer given is Celtics, the Reader may ask for
the more specific answer, Boston Celtics.
- The
Reader must wait until the Spotter recognizes the team member who will
answer.
- If the
first team answers a toss-up incorrectly, the Reader will give the other
team an opportunity to answer before stating the correct answer. If the reader makes a mistake and gives
the answer before the second team is allowed to answer, the first available
tie-breaker question will be given to the second team.
- Each
team has five seconds consultation time per part for a four-part bonus
question or ten seconds per part for a two-part bonus question. Once time has been called, the Reader
will ask for the answer immediately without pause or interruption. Only the captain may answer a
bouncy-back question.
- After
the fifth, tenth and fifteenth questions, scores should be checked before
proceeding.
- Teams
will remain quietly in the room at the end of the round until the signal
to leave is given.
- The
coaches or designees will sign the score sheet before leaving the round.
Scorekeeper
- School
names and systems should be written at the top of the score sheet. Please clearly label alternate teams.
- Toss-up
questions are worth ten points.
Each part of a four-part bonus question is worth five points; each
part of a two-part bonus question is worth then points.
- Immediately
upon completion of a round, coaches or captains should sign the score
sheet which will then be taken to the host team representative. Questions for the next round will be
picked up at that time.
- All
scores are to be emailed to Cindy McGraw at cmcgraw@garesa.org by the end of the
next school day so scores may be posted on the West Georgia RESA website.
- Match
winners will be determined by the highest average score for the match.
- Teams
who attend at least four of the five matches will be eligible for the
overall award and will have their lowest round score dropped. Host teams who attend four matches
will have their lowest round score dropped. The final match will consist of two rounds which will count
toward overall awards.
Schedule
The following schedule will be used for all matches:

of the winners.
