Dr. Steve Barker is the Superintendent of the Coweta County School System. Prior to being named superintendent, he served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal at Coweta County elementary, middle and high schools during his 29-year career. The Coweta County Board of Education hired Dr. Barker as Superintendent of the Coweta County School System effective April 1, 2011.

Dr. Barker began his teaching career with the Coweta County School System in 1990 at Evans Middle School. He was named assistant principal of Northgate High School in 1998, principal of Canongate Elementary School in 1999, and principal of Smokey Road Middle School in 2001. Dr. Barker served as principal of Newnan High School from 2003 to 2007 before being named Director of Administrative Services for the school system, a position he held from 2007-2011.

During the eight years that Dr. Barker has served as superintendent, the school system received an exemplary AdvancED Accreditation Report, opened an 8th Grade College and Career Academy, and developed a learning service delivery model that provides more advanced opportunities for all students. Dr. Barker supported a one-to-one Chromebook deployment to all students in grades 3-12, and has led the district through multiple facility expansions and renovations while keeping the school system debt free. Dr. Barker credits supportive board members and the dedicated employees, students, families and community members with the successes experienced by the district.

Dr. Barker earned his B.A. in Education with an emphasis on Social Studies from Shorter College, his Master’s from the State University of West Georgia, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Barker received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Shorter University in 2011 and the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders (GAEL) Exemplary Service Award in 2017. In 2018 Dr. Barker was named the Georgia Superintendent of the Year by the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) and by the Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA). He has presented on matters related to effective school system governance for organizations such as GSBA, GSSA, AdvancED, and the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI). Dr. Barker currently serves on the GSSA Executive Board, the Newnan-Coweta Chamber Board of Directors, the West Georgia RESA Board of Directors, and the Coweta County Board of Health. He is a native of Dalton, Georgia, married to Karen Jackson Barker, and has two children – Cade and Lilli Glen.
